Orlando Weather

Orlando climate changes and has many characteristics similar to that of a tropical climate. However according to Koppen climate classification Orlando is situated in the humid subtropical climate zone. Orlando has 2 major seasons, which are the hot and rainy season and the dry and cool season. The hot and rain season runs from May to late September while the cool and dry season runs from late October to April. The cool and dry season also features some days when the weather is really warm. The warm and humid climate of this country is mostly caused by low elevation and closeness to the Tropic of cancer. The Gulf Stream also influences Orlando weather as it streams around the peninsula of the state of Florida.

Hot and Rainy Season

During the hot and rainy season temperatures exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees centigrade) almost on a daily basis throughout the season. Relative humidity during this period often exceeds 70 percentages which creates a tropically moist atmosphere. The average time for this season to occur is April 19 to October 11. Humidity during this seasons acts like a buffer which prevents temperatures from surpassing the 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees centigrade) mark. The highest temperature ever recorded in Orlando was 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees centigrade) which was recorded on the 2nd of July 1998.

During this season strong thunderstorms occur almost on a daily basis. Thunderstorms are mostly triggered by air masses that come from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean which collide over central Florida. The air masses can bring in significant rainfall, strong winds and even hail storms which can be very destructive.

Cool and Dry Season

During the cool and dry season, humidity is lower and temperatures are quite mild and can fluctuate more readily. In the month of January afternoon high average temperatures are 71 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees centigrade) which fall to an average of 49 degrees Fahrenheit (9 degrees centigrade) at night. Temperatures fall below freezing point on an average of 2.4 nights per annum. The lowest recorded temperature was 19n degrees Fahrenheit (-7 degrees centigrade) which was recorded on the 21st of January 1985. During this season, freezing temperatures only occur after cold fronts. Snow is very rare in this city although there are some notable times that the city has received significant amounts of this kind of precipitation.

Precipitation

The average amount of rainfall received in Orlando is 50.6 inches (1290 mm) most of which is received between the months June to September. The months October to May are dry months and during this period there is a great hazard of wildfires. In 1998 El Nino caused an unusually wet season after which the dry season caused a record breaking wildfire. Annual average rainfall is 50.6 inches (1285.2 mm). The months June, July, August and September receive the most rainfall with average monthly rainfall levels of 7.58, 7.27, 7.13 and 6.06 inches (192.5, 184.7, 184.1 and 153.9 mm) respectively.

Adverse Weather

Orlando experiences a considerable number of hurricanes although it experiences fewer hurricanes than South Florida and other coastal regions. Due to the city location from the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, hurricanes always arrive weak. The most recent notorious hurricane experienced was Hurricane Charley which occurred in 2004 and left a great trail of destruction. Storms do not cause any flooding threats as the city id 100 feet (30 m) above sea level. Tornadoes do occur occasionally and are associated with the infrequent winter storms.
